Decarbonising the North East to create a greener, fairer, and more sustainable region

A collaboration between local government, business, education, the public sector, and civil society to drive a comprehensive regional approach to tackling the climate emergency.

We're committed to driving forward decarbonisation and our contribution to national and global net zero targets by focusing on:

Our evidence base

Our evidence dashboard includes 15 indicators that provide insights into the extent and nature of progress towards Net Zero. They are grouped into 3 categories: Cleaner, Greener, and Fairer.

Four sectors account for the vast majority of our greenhouse gas emissions. 31% from domestic. 29% from transport. 16% from industry. 12% from agriculture.

The remaining 12% of emissions were from the public, commercial and waste management sectors.

Emissions fell by 50% from 2005 to 2021. The extent of change varied by sector. Industry down 72%. Domestic down 40%. Transport down 22%. Agriculture down 11%.

We’ve made progress in reducing North East emissions, but there is more to be done to meet our targets.
